Hobonichi started as a lifestyle website “Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun,” [Almost Daily Itoi Newspaper] in 1998 featuring “almost-daily” essays by founder and editor-in-chief, Shigesato Itoi, who is well known for other ventures including game design and songwriting. In 2001, the Hobonichi Techo [planner] was launched after positive response from readers when asked if they would purchase a techo by the brand if developed. Since then, the Hobonichi lineup has grown from 1 to 7 types, with some being available in Japanese, English, and Chinese, and has sold over 10 million copies over the world.
Highly absorbent, quick-drying paper designed to soak up excess ink from fountain pens and other writing instruments. The front features an illustration from the novel "Moominsummer Madness". Beneath the image is a message in Finnish: “Write as much as you like.” The letterpress printing gives the card a pleasingly textured feel, and each piece has its own unique charm, such as sligh variations in ink coverage.
