Hobonichi started as a lifestyle website “Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun,” [Almost Daily Itoi Newspaper] in 1998 featuring “almost-daily” essays by founder and editor-in-chief, Shigesato Itoi, who is well known for other ventures including game design and songwriting. In 2001, the Hobonichi Techo [planner] was launched after positive response from readers when asked if they would purchase a techo by the brand if developed. Since then, the Hobonichi lineup has grown from 1 to 7 types, with some being available in Japanese, English, and Chinese, and has sold over 10 million copies over the world.

This striking design features the back of Frederick sitting quietly in a white, picture-book-like world, beautifully contrasting with the red of the poppy flowers and the spine. The back cover is printed with the handwritten word "Frederick," just like it appears on the endpapers of the original book. The cover has been constructed as a light hardcover book with some give to it so it still bends.
