2026 Hobonichi Techo English Weeks - Makoto Matsubayashi: Dot
Hobonichi started as a lifestyle website “Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun,” [Almost Daily Itoi Newspaper] in 1998 featuring “almost-daily” essays by founder and editor-in-chief, Shigesato Itoi, who is well known for other ventures including game design and songwriting. In 2001, the Hobonichi Techo [planner] was launched after positive response from readers when asked if they would purchase a techo by the brand if developed. Since then, the Hobonichi lineup has grown from 1 to 7 types, with some being available in Japanese, English, and Chinese, and has sold over 10 million copies over the world.
Wallet-sized Techo Weeks in English Features:
A techo cover made using a drawing by printmaker and artist Makoto Matsubayashi. White dots painted leisurely on a black background. While this is a clean and simple design, the rough patches and movements that can only be achieved by drawing by hand exude a particular gentleness. The tiny flowers set into the dots is another thing to look out for.
