Clairefontaine was established in 1858 on the site of an old paper mill that was built in 16th century France in an area that is well-known for paper production, due to its abundant resources. Towards the end of the 19th century, Clairefontaine began using the paper they manufactured to create products such as envelopes and notebooks.
