In 2001, the Hobonichi Techo [planner] was launched after positive response from readers when asked if they would purchase a techo by the brand if developed. - The “Pine Forest”, painted approximately 420 years ago by Hasegawa Tōhaku, one of the most iconic painters of the Azuchi-Momoyama period (1573-1603), is now featured as a Hobonichi Techo covers and Weeks design. This National Treasure, housed in the Tokyo National Museum, is hailed as a masterpiece of early modern ink painting. In this work, he avoids the prominent outlines typical of ink painting, using only delicate gradations to depict a windswept pine grove with hazy light seeping through the mist. He created this atmospheric scene through his mastery of Chinese-style ink painting, breathing new life into the classic subject matter of a pine grove.
