Workshop Instructor: Shelly Kim

Letters By Shells Book Launch

This weekend we are excited to host Shelly Kim’s Book Launch Party for her new book Digital Hand Lettering and Modern Calligraphy!

We first met Shelly, the founder and artist behind Letters By Shells, in 2016 when she taught her first brush lettering workshop! She has since traveled the world teaching and is a frequent instructor at our shop. She brings her passion for lettering and her positive energy in all her sessions! Shelly goes out of her way to provide support and encouragement to all her students! That’s what she’s all about! She has two workshops coming up this month - Intro to iPad Lettering and Modern Brush Lettering. We are excited to feature Shelly and some of her thoughts on her lettering journey as she celebrates the launch of her book!

Tell us a bit about yourself—Where are you from? What do you do?

Hey! I'm Shelly Kim, the creator behind Letters By Shells. Born and raised in California and currently based in Pasadena, CA. I specialize in brush calligraphy using brush pens, watercolors or the iPad and just love spreading all the positive vibes through my artwork!

How did you get into brush lettering?

I started lettering in 2015 when I was working full-time. I needed a creative escape and a way to destress from work. Discovering art and lettering finally gave me a new perspective and vision in life.

You spent much of this past year teaching workshops around the world. What was that experience like for you?

Never in a million years did I think this was ever possible. It has been a dream and a goal to teach outside of California and the US. I have been blessed to meet such amazing people who just want to learn lettering as a creative escape too. During this experience, I have learned a lot and it has helped me grow as a workshop instructor.

You just launched your book in August! What can your readers expect?

I'm soooo excited about this. You can learn everything about the brush lettering process, digitizing and also the iPad lettering process. It's a lot of information all packed in this book and I just cannot wait for you to get your hands on my new book!

What do you love most about what you do?

The chance to express myself through my artwork and encourage others to create daily. I love spreading positive messages and being everyone's support system!

What inspires you in your art?

All the different mediums you can use to create an art piece. The possibilities are endless! It's amazing.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not lettering and creating art?

Checking out all the cute coffee cafes, new places to eat and traveling with my fiancé, Richard!
